Pleasant Valley’s Vision: Serving
by Al Bean, PV Member
“Good evening, my name is ______, and I will be your server this evening.” Sound familiar? Folks who serve meals in a restaurant often introduce themselves in this way. They do so to create a more personal bond between themselves and customers. Often it works. Instead of calling “Hey you!” or waving our hands, we think of them, and treat them, as people. But can you imagine walking into your small group next week and saying to someone, “My name is ____, and I will be your server today”?
Hundreds of us at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church serve. Some of us serve the congregation behind the scenes and some serve up front. Even more of us serve our families, neighbors, or fellow employees. Are we serving because we have to serve or because we want to serve? Even more, do we want others to know that we are serving them so they will appreciate it or, even, praise us? At church, while you serve the Lord greeting, painting, teaching, listening (whatever your service is), do you want folks to look at you as a servant? Or do you want them to honor your Master? Good servants know they need to please their employer as they carry out their tasks.
What about our church? Do we want folks to identify us as that big church on I-35 or as the church that serves? If we want to follow our Lord as a congregation, we will serve the world around us intentionally and joyfully.

God’s Vision for Growth
by Stacey Burke, PV Member

Growth is an essential part of God’s vision for Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. He wants us to have a church that is effective in fulfilling its purpose: to bring others to Him.
Pleasant Valley Baptist Church’s mission is “connecting people with God and with others.” We are called to carry out God’s work in our community, in our city, and in our world. We cannot do this to our highest potential unless spiritual growth is taking place. Our job as a church is to equip Christians for serving the community, to learn the truths of God, and to bring others to Him by showing His irresistible love.
How do we accomplish our God-given mission? This week, we will explore the story of the early church and follow their example. The early church grew by meeting together regularly. They supported each other. They met together. They prayed for God’s guidance. They were unified. They showed irresistible care to others. They impacted their community for Christ as a result.
As you read this week’s lessons, think about ways God uses the church to help you grow and ways you can help others grow!
