One family’s adoption story
Damon and Linda Becker
In 2006, when Damon and I applied to adopt a child from China, Pastor Vernon told us about the Families for Adoption Ministries. Foreign adoption wasn’t in the news like it is today (this was “pre-Angelina”) so we thought people might even think we were a little crazy. At the first Adoption Ministries event we attended, we met many families in various stages of adoption, both domestic and foreign, as well as foster families and even people who had been adopted themselves. In particular, we met a family who had recently received their referral for their daughter and were leaving in several weeks for China. It was really encouraging as we needed the reality check that there really was a little girl waiting for us and it wasn’t all about filling out documents, getting physicals, background checks and fingerprints! The Families for Adoption Ministry events allowed us to network with other families and access helpful information. When we finally traveled to China last August we felt the support and prayers from the group. Since we’ve been home, we have been blessed to encourage other families in the process of or just considering adoption. It is still exciting to follow other families’ adoption journeys! The Adoption Ministry also provides Gabrielle the opportunity to get to know other children who have had similar life experiences.
